Between bridal bouquet and shop
fitting
"Fascinated by both trendy and
classic"
As an arranger and stylist, Desiree
Glasbergen (born 1974) combines two
apparent extremes. She likes
creating extremely trendy work. Yet
at the same time she is a great fan
of the ‘classical school’, with a
lot of attention to a highly
detailed way of working. It is
particularly in the bridal work that
she does that she can express this.
She remembers a lavish bridal show
in Sweden well. Particularly because
she follows the fashion trends in
Sweden - and in the other
Scandinavian countries where she
does a lot of work - very closely.
Desiree gets inspiration from
international trade fairs in Paris
and Frankfurt, amongst other places.
There she spots the latest
developments in the area of
interiors, glass and ceramics, vases
and pots. The annual trend training
organised by the Flower Council of
Holland for the arrangers who work
for the Council also inspires her.
"It is led by a trend expert, and
then you can also see the links."
Paint roller
Desiree started her education at
horticultural college. She then
gained experience in a flower shop
where she was the manager for 4
years. As a freelancer she gained
experience in more than 10 countries
(she speaks good English), working
on demonstrations, styling,
teaching, product photography,
large-scale decorations at events
(weddings), decorating floats for
flower parades and shop
transformations at home and abroad.
For this she works less meticulously
than if she were producing a bridal
bouquet, but handles a paint roller
with aplomb, in order to transform a
flower shop in an instant with
balanced areas of colour.
Kink
Desiree does not have a definite
favourite flower. She like fragile
varieties, like the Gloriosa, but
she also has a soft spot for peonies
with their large petals. Roses also
score high with her, particularly
because they are such distinctive
flowers. But her favourites are:
"Flowers that go their own way. A
flower with a kink in the stem
challenges you to do something
special with it. I find that
fascinating."
Beach walks
Desiree considers the fact that she
is trend-setting and can work
quickly to be her main
characteristics. Exercise (tennis)
and long beach walks are her way of
relaxing and emptying her mind.
Those walks are an excellent source
of inspiration for another of her
activities: Desiree creates objects
from fruit, birch bark and other
natural materials, with which she
decorates venues including beach
cafes. |
